The United States economy is continuing to grow and demand for rail service shows that the freight rail industry is vital to its growth. Rail service provides cost-effective transportation and continues to show positive economic trends. Fortunately, for the Brush Valley Region, The North Shore Railroad Company is an excellent representation of this positive economic impact locally.


The North Shore Railroad Company is an independent, locally owned and private freight railroad company located out of Northumberland. They have been in business for over 30 years and employ 95 local residents.


The North Shore Railroad owns 26 locomotives; they are part of a nationwide rail network and work interchangeably with Norfolk Southern Corporation and Canadian Pacific Railway.


As a company, they utilize local contractors and purchase local goods, generating economic activity in our area. In Northumberland alone, they have 47 vendors they patronize. The total dollar amount from utilizing companies based in Pennsylvania is $5.8 million.


The North Shore Railroad operates, maintains and markets a 250 mile track network in Central Pennsylvania. They handle 30,000 loaded railcars annually. They serve customers in an eight county area in Central PA.


Companies using railway services to transport various materials often save money and time. According the US Department of Transportation, rail usage is on the rise and projections into 2040 continue to show an increase.


The North Shore Railroad also provides passenger train services for charitable fundraising activities in the communities they serve.
